COMPETITION: A pretty good day. Two Regularities (with three timing spots). We did a respectable: 3-0-2, for a total of 5 penalty points. We also had a Speed Test on a small dirt track. We were quick and although there will be a few cars faster we won’t get many penalty points. Although the official scores will come out later tonight, I believe we will continue to be 3rd in Class and 8th Overall.
OBSERVATIONS: In this part of the world you rarely see a Ferrari, a Porsche (we did see one today) or any proper sports car. You rarely see a Tesla (we saw one yesterday) or any other electric car.
What you will see are pick-up trucks (most popular is the Ford F-150), big SUV’s (not the small type that does car-pooling in the suburbs)….and almost every home we pass has either a motor home, a boat, a trailer or a motorcycle, or all of them.
What I’m trying to say is that the style of life out here in the country is very different from the lives of those of us who live in big metropolitan areas. People out here fish, hunt and put up their own preserves. They all have cowboy boots and cowboy hats and use them every day.
Another facet of living out here is the solitude. Farm houses and ranch houses can be 10’s of miles apart. Children growing up here don’t have playdates after school. It probably takes the school bus several hours to get the kids home.
Tomorrow, we have short day. We get into Jackson Hole, Wyoming by 1pm so we can spend the day exploring a great town. Should be fun.
